Grad Andrew Chekhman Jewelry Designs Inspired by Los Angeles

As the president of Checks & Co., Jewelry Design Alumnus Andrew Chekhman designs and manufactures custom jewelry in silver with CZ or gold with diamonds. His goal is to grow his brand into the premium custom jewelry shop of Los Angeles. We caught up with him to find out more.

Describe your line: My line and most of my work is inspired by my love for hip-hop/rap music, streetwear, the city of Los Angeles, and other things I personally love. Doing custom work allows me to do the same for others while still doing what I love.

What do you like most about jewelry design? What I love most about jewelry design is being able to take my vision (or anyone else’s) and turn it into a wearable piece of art that not only allows the wearer to express their individual style but also acts as an investment and holds much of its value over time.
 
Why did you choose FIDM? Being the son of a jeweler, I always knew I wanted to be a part of the business and as soon as I found out there was a Jewelry Design program, I knew FIDM was right for me.
 
How did FIDM prepare you for your career? FIDM helped prepare me for my career in every way possible. From the very basics where we were taught techniques to render our designs on paper, all the way to teaching us how to make them in metal with our hands, and introducing us to 3D CAD Programs that professionals use.
 
Any advice for current FIDM Students? Just do your work and enjoy your time; if you’re having fun then you’re doing it right.
